Lake Dojran is the warmest of Macedonia's lakes, shared with Greece, shallow enough for children and home to a fishing tradition found almost nowhere else in the world. The drive to Dojran
The route runs on the A1 motorway to around Negotino, then branches toward Valandovo and on to Lake Dojran — about ≈ 2 h 35 min over 174 km, most of it on a good regional road. The car drops you directly at an address in Nov Dojran or Star Dojran, depending on where you're staying.
Star Dojran, on the western shore, is the quieter side with holiday cottages; Nov Dojran, the main settlement, has more hotels, restaurants, and a developed beach — tell us at booking which one you need.
The lake and its fishing tradition
Dojran is one of the few places in the world where fish are caught with the help of birds — cormorants, trained across generations to drive fish into enclosed sections of the lake called mandras. The tradition runs centuries deep and is as much a part of the town's identity as the lake itself.
Local cuisine has one dish you'll rarely find elsewhere — fish grilled wrapped in reed. The lake's warm, shallow water makes it good for swimming, including with young children, for most of the summer.
When to go
Summer, roughly June to September, is beach and swimming season — the lake runs warmer than most in the country, and the shallows make it comfortable for small children. Spring and autumn are quieter, good for a walk along the shore and trying the fish without the summer crowds.
A single day is enough for a relaxed walk and lunch by the water; for a longer stay, Nov Dojran has several places to stay along the beachfront.
Taxi or bus
A few buses a day run from Skopje to Dojran, taking three to four hours because of stops along the way — roughly double a direct drive. The bus station also isn't necessarily close to where you're staying.
