Mavrovo is the country's largest national park, home to the artificial Lake Mavrovo, the Zare Lazarevski ski centre, and villages of old Macedonian mountain architecture. The drive from Skopje
The route runs on the A2 motorway to Gostivar, then climbs toward Mavrovo past Bogovinje and along the edge of the national park. The stretch above Gostivar is narrower and windier than the motorway, but fully paved and open year-round. The car can drop you at Mavrovi Anovi, at the lakeshore or at the ski centre, depending on where you're headed.
Lake Mavrovo and the submerged church
The lake is artificial, built in the 1950s for the hydroelectric plant, and beneath its surface lies the old village church of St. Nicholas, built in 1850. In dry summers, when the water level drops, the bell tower and walls rise back above the surface — a sight that draws visitors whichever year it happens. The shoreline is good for a walk, and kayaks and bikes can be rented nearby.
The Zare Lazarevski ski centre
Zare Lazarevski sits on the slopes of Mount Bistra, with eleven ski lifts and three cable cars, and skiing between 1,255 and 1,860 metres above sea level. The season runs December to March, and Mavrovo's altitude and snow cover make it one of the more reliable ski areas in the country. The road up to the centre is cleared regularly, but winter tyres are essential.
The villages and the Radika Canyon
The surrounding villages keep their old stone-and-timber architecture — Galičnik, known for the traditional Galička Svadba wedding celebration each July, along with Nikiforovo, Trebište and Lazaropole. South of the park, the road runs through the Radika Canyon, squeezed between the Šar, Korab and Bistra mountains, with a few pull-offs for the view over the river. From here the road continues to St. Jovan Bigorski Monastery and on to Debar.
Plan your visit
Mavrovo works year-round with a different character each season — skiing in winter, hiking, cycling and the lake in summer. A day covers the ski centre or the lake on their own, but many visitors continue to Bigorski Monastery or Debar's spas the same day, since both are a short drive further. Check the weather before a winter trip, and bring water for longer summer walks.
Taxi or bus
A bus runs from Skopje to Mavrovo, with a few daily departures and a trip of around an hour and a half, but most services stop at Mavrovi Anovi rather than at the lakeshore or the ski centre itself. For a family or group with skis, kayaks or hiking gear, a private car is more comfortable, works out cheaper per person, and drops you exactly where you asked.
Return and continuing to Debar
Book the return to Skopje in the same request — the driver can wait up to 6 hours at a discounted rate, the first hour free and then billed per started hour, while a later return is booked as a separate one-way transfer at the normal price.
