Galičica is the mountain range separating Lake Ohrid from Lake Prespa, and the pass road across it is among the most scenic drives in the country, with viewpoints showing both lakes in a single frame. A private transfer from Skopje takes you straight to the park entrance, with the same car waiting to bring you back.
The drive from Skopje
The car travels through Tetovo, Gostivar and Kičevo on the A2 motorway, then on toward Ohrid, where part of the new road link is still being finished. From Ohrid, the road heads south along the lake past Trpejca, then climbs toward the park entrance — a narrow but paved mountain road with constant bends.
The pass over Galičica toward Prespa sometimes closes in harsh winter weather because of snow and ice; when that happens the alternative is the longer road via Resen, and the driver checks current conditions beforehand.
Both lakes from one viewpoint
At the highest point of the pass, around 1,600 metres, several marked viewpoints show Lake Ohrid on one side and Lake Prespa on the other, in the same frame. The Leskovski Uši viewpoint is considered one of the finest in the park.
The road is manageable for any type of car, but with frequent bends — this isn't a fast route, it's a drive worth stopping along at every viewpoint.
Magaro peak and the trails
For a proper walk, the trail to Magaro peak (2,255 m) starts from the Lipova car park, close to the park entrance. The climb takes about two hours and the descent about one — not technically difficult, but steep at the start.
From the summit, on a clear day, both lakes are visible at once, along with much of southwestern North Macedonia.
Plan your visit
May to October is the best window for the park — the pass is open and the trails are dry. The entrance fee is modest, a few hundred denars per person. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes if you're planning the walk to Magaro.
Many visitors combine Galičica with a visit to Ohrid or a short stop in Trpejca on the way to or from the park. Half a day covers a drive through the viewpoints; allow a full day if you add the walk up to Magaro.
Taxi vs the bus
There's no public transport into the park itself — the pass and its viewpoints are reachable only by private or rented vehicle, since bus routes to Ohrid don't continue onto the mountain road. That makes a private transfer effectively the only option for anyone without their own car.
The driver can stop at each viewpoint along the way, something a fixed-schedule organised tour usually can't offer.
The return trip
Book the return to Skopje for the same day - the driver can wait up to 6 hours, the first hour free and each further started hour billed, with the return leg itself discounted; the booking form shows the exact total.
