Pelister is the country's oldest national park — a mountain massif with two glacial lakes known as the "Pelister's Eyes" and forests of molika pine that have stood for centuries. A private transfer from Skopje takes you up to the paved car park inside the park, and a same-day return is discounted.
The drive from Skopje to Pelister
The car takes the A1 motorway to Veles, then the Gradsko–Prilep expressway to Bitola. From there the road climbs through the villages of Magarevo and Dihovo, paved all the way to Begova Česma (about 1,420 m), where the Kopanki ski center sits — the car parks there.
There's no road further for a vehicle. Reaching Big Lake (2,218 m) means hiking, and the walk takes roughly 3 to 5 hours round trip depending on the trail and your pace. The full drive takes ≈ 3 h 40 min over about 189 km.
Pelister's Eyes and the molika pines
The park was established in 1948, the first national park in the former Yugoslavia, and spans roughly 890 to 2,601 m across the Baba mountain massif. Molika (Pinus peuce) is a rare five-needle pine that grows up to 40 m tall and lives past 230 years — worldwide, it grows on only a handful of Balkan mountains.
Big Lake and Small Lake, the glacial lakes known as "Pelister's Eyes," are the goal of the park's most popular hike. The park is home to grey wolf, otter and bearded vulture, and its flora counts over 1,050 plant species.
Planning the visit
Summer and early autumn are the best time to hike to the lakes — snow lingers on the higher ground well into spring. The park charges a modest per-car entrance fee, around 50 denars. In winter, the same road up to Kopanki leads to Pelister's ski runs instead.
The village of Dihovo, about 5 km before the park entrance, makes a good stop — stone houses, the Sapunčica river with natural swimming pools, and a starting point for guided hikes up to the lakes.
The trail to Big Lake doesn't require mountaineering experience, but it's long and steep in places, so sturdy shoes and water are worth carrying. The bearded vulture, which nests in the massif's cliffs, is occasionally seen circling the valley right around the lakes.
Taxi vs getting there on your own
There's no regular bus line into the park — public transport only reaches Bitola, and from there you'd need your own transport up through Magarevo and Dihovo. A private transfer straight to the Kopanki car park skips that whole last stretch, and the price is fixed per vehicle, not per passenger, so a group splits one fare.
The return trip and pairing with Bitola
