The drive from Skopje to the dam

The road to Matka runs southwest from the city, skirting the foothills of Vodno before dropping through a few villages toward the Treska river gorge. The final stretch hugs the cliff face and narrows at the tight bends - a stretch your driver already knows well and won't rush. You're dropped right at the car park by the dam, which is where the canyon proper starts; beyond it, no car goes further - everything past the dam is on foot or by boat.

Parking is free but fills up by midday on sunny summer weekends. A private transfer skips the hunt for a space: the driver drops you at the entrance and you choose when to head back.

The lake, the dam and Vrelo Cave

The dam was built in 1938, backing up the Treska into a narrow lake pinched between limestone walls several kilometres long. Boats leave from the jetty by the dam for Vrelo Cave, a flooded system explored to a depth of over 200 metres - among the deepest underwater caves in Europe - and home to a sizeable bat colony inside. The round trip runs about an hour and costs around 500 denars per person.

Two monasteries: St. Andrew and St. Nikola Šiševski

St. Andrew's Monastery sits just above the dam, a flat ten-minute walk away - the most visited and best-preserved church in the canyon, built in the 14th century with frescoes still on view inside. For anyone with stronger legs, St. Nikola Šiševski Monastery perches high above the gorge: about ninety minutes of steep climbing from the dam on foot, or a shorter route - a short boat crossing followed by a thirty-minute uphill scramble. The view back over the lake and cliffs from up there is worth the climb.

Kayaking and the hiking trails

The lake itself can be explored by kayak or canoe, rented by the dam for around 300 denars an hour - calm water, easy for beginners and fine for supervised kids. On foot, the canyon trails are marked with red-and-yellow blazes and follow the cliffs to both monasteries; more serious hikers can keep going beyond them, up onto the slopes of Vodno, for a full-day crossing.

When to go and how long to stay

Spring and autumn are the sweet spot - comfortable hiking weather and thinner crowds. Summer brings warm water for swimming and full boats, but also the busiest weekends; go on a weekday or early morning for the lake to yourself. Winter is quiet, though some boat operators cut back their hours off-season, so check current conditions before you set out. Plan on at least half a day; a full day covers both monasteries and time on the water. Matka pairs well with a short evening stop at Vodno's Millennium Cross on the way back into town.

Taxi vs. the bus to Matka

City bus 60 terminates at Matka, and the ride takes roughly 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic; it runs on a fairly wide gap, something like every one to two hours, so the trip means planning around its timetable. A private taxi goes straight to the car park at the dam, no transfer through the bus station and no waiting on a schedule - easier with kids or kayak gear. The fare is fixed per vehicle, so a group splits one price instead of buying individual tickets.

The trip back, or on to the next stop

A same-day return from Matka to Skopje is discounted — the first hour of waiting is free, then it's billed per started hour, and the booking form shows the total once you've finished at the canyon. A later return is booked as a separate one-way transfer at the normal price.
