At around 15 metres, Kolešino is one of the easiest waterfalls to reach in North Macedonia — a short shaded path above the village of Kolešino, on Mount Belasica. A private car drives you from Skopje straight to the parking area at the trailhead, then brings you back the same day, at a discounted rate for the return leg.
The drive to Kolešino
The route runs through Štip and Radoviš to Strumica, then south to the slopes of Belasica and the village of Kolešino, in Novo Selo municipality. The final kilometres follow a winding local road up to the village. Budget ≈ 2 h 20 min for the 157 km to the parking area at the end of the asphalt.
Your driver drops you right at the start of the path, where the road for cars ends, so there's no need to ask around the village for directions.
The path and the falls
A short, well-kept path leads to the waterfall, about 350 metres long, with stone steps, a few narrow stretches and a small wooden bridge right over the water — a five- to ten-minute walk each way, entirely shaded by dense forest along the Baba River. It's among the easiest waterfalls to reach in the country, manageable for children and older visitors alike in normal conditions.
The site also has a viewing bridge built right over the falls, benches to rest on, and a covered picnic spot with a grill area for a break after the walk.
Smolare on the same trip
Smolare Waterfall, the tallest in the country at 39.5 metres, is in a neighbouring village only a few minutes' drive from Kolešino. Its path is longer — about 580 metres with 300 steps, roughly 40 minutes of walking in total. The two falls are often combined in one visit, with Kolešino as the shorter, easier leg of the trip.
When to go and what to bring
The waterfall runs year-round, strongest in spring; summer is more comfortable for walking thanks to the shade, and autumn brings good colour along the path. The stone steps can get slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes with good grip are worth it in any season.
The short walk means Kolešino fits easily into a bigger day out — with Smolare, with the Vodoča and Veljusa monasteries, or with central Strumica, all about half an hour's drive away. For Kolešino alone, allow one to two hours including the drive to and from the parking area.
Taxi vs. the bus
There's no regular bus from Skopje to Kolešino village — a bus reaches Strumica a few times a day, but beyond that, to the village and the trailhead, there's effectively no public transport. A private transfer is therefore the realistic way to get straight to the parking area and back the same day, with no transfers and no wait at a bus stop in an unfamiliar area.
