Lake Tikveš is the largest artificial lake in the country, created in 1968 by damming the Crna River. A private car takes you from your address in Skopje straight to the dam, and the same driver brings you back once you're done exploring.
The drive to the lake
From Skopje you drive south on the A1 motorway past Veles to Kavadarci, then on towards the village of Vozarci and the dam. The road to Kavadarci is fully paved, and the last stretch to the dam is a local road, narrower in places but fine for any car. It covers 109 km and takes ≈ 2 h.
The car reaches the dam and the shore at Vozarci, with a view over the whole lake. St. George Poloski Monastery, which stands right on the water, is reachable beyond that only by dirt track or boat — that's not part of a normal car transfer.
What to expect at the lake
The lake covers about 14 square kilometres and stretches nearly 29 kilometres, and its irregular, branching shape creates dozens of hidden coves. It's known for fishing — sheat-fish, carp and bleak dominate, and the sheat-fish here can grow to around 2 metres. Eagles and hawks often circle overhead, and the surrounding cliffs are largely uninhabited.
Near the dam you can rent a boat or just sit by the water, with the villages around offering a quiet view without crowds. This isn't a developed beach with facilities — it's a natural setting, so bring your own food, water and shade.
Planning your visit
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant, with less heat and more birdlife about. Summer at the dam can get very hot with little shade, so bring a hat and water. Budget two to three hours at the lake itself, more if you rent a boat or plan to fish.
The lake combines easily with Kavadarci, only about ten minutes' drive away, or a winery visit in the Tikveš wine region on the same day.
Taxi versus the bus
There's no scheduled bus to the dam or Vozarci — public transport only reaches Kavadarci, and there's no organised onward transport to the lake from there. For anyone coming from Skopje, that effectively means a private or rental car.
