The drive from Skopje to Tirana

There are a few different ways to drive to Tirana, and the driver picks on the day based on traffic and road conditions. Via Kosovo, crossing at Blace and then Vërmica–Morinë into Albania, is usually the fastest option, since most of the route runs on motorway. Via Debar, crossing directly into Albania, is the shortest in kilometres, but the mountain road takes more time. Via Struga and the Qafë Thanë crossing, along Lake Ohrid, is the most scenic route, but also the slowest.

Whichever route is used, the car drops you straight at your address, hotel or meeting point in Tirana. The ≈ 4 h 15 min estimate covers normal conditions — border waits vary, and travel can take longer during busy periods, especially in summer.

Border crossing and documents

Macedonian citizens can cross into Kosovo and Albania with a valid ID card — but only the new card reading North Macedonia; the old Republic of Macedonia card is refused at the border. Travellers of other nationalities should check their own entry requirements in advance.

The Blace–Hani i Elezit crossing into Kosovo runs a joint, single-stop check, with waits usually around 30 minutes. The Albania crossings — Vërmica–Morinë, Qafë Thanë or Blato near Debar — are typically faster, but waits vary and can build up at busy times, especially in summer.

Skanderbeg Square and the old centre

Skanderbeg Square is the heart of Tirana, repaved in stone between 2017 and 2021, ringed by the Et'hem Bey Mosque from 1794 (known for its frescoes), a clock tower, the National History Museum and the Opera and Ballet. A short walk away is Bunk'Art 2, a museum inside a former bunker covering Albania's communist period, while the larger Bunk'Art 1 sits on the edge of the city.

Dajti Express and the Blloku district

The Dajti Express cable car climbs from the edge of the city up Mount Dajti in a few minutes, with views over Tirana and, on clear days, towards Durrës and the Adriatic; the summit has a panoramic restaurant and forest walking trails. Blloku, once off-limits to ordinary citizens under communism, is now the city's centre for cafés, restaurants and nightlife.

Plan your visit

A day covers Skanderbeg Square, the old centre and a museum of your choice; with two days you can add the Dajti Express. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking the city, while summer brings higher temperatures and more visitors.

Durrës is only about 36 km further, so many visitors combine it the same day or the next with the beach and the Roman amphitheatre. Check current opening hours for museums before you go.

Taxi or bus

International coaches (FlixBus, Gjirafa and similar) run between Skopje and Tirana, taking roughly 5 to 7 hours for about 20 to 30 EUR per passenger, on a fixed schedule and dropping at a bus station outside the centre. A private car is booked for your time, carries passengers with luggage — from €330 by car for up to 3 passengers, or €405 by van for 4-8 — and drops you straight at your address — no station wait and no onward transfer.

Return trips and business travel

Book the return to Skopje in the same request — the driver can wait up to 6 hours at a discounted rate, the first hour free and then billed per started hour, while a later return is booked as a separate one-way transfer at the normal price. Tirana also hosts embassies, international companies and Albania's national institutions, so the car gets you to a meeting address on time — you can book transport for a colleague or guest with just their contact details.
