On the edge of town, at the foot of Mount Vitosha, Boyana Church is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its 13th-century frescoes, among the most significant examples of medieval painting in the Balkans. Vitosha itself offers hiking trails and viewpoints over the city, reachable for a few hours' outing from the centre.

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant for walking the centre and heading up Vitosha; summer brings more visitors and longer weekend border waits. For a day visit, three to four hours cover the main sights in the centre, while a fuller look that includes Boyana and Vitosha is worth a full day.
