The drive from Skopje to Thessaloniki
The trip covers 232 km and takes ≈ 3 h under normal conditions. Almost the entire route is motorway — the A1 south through Veles, Negotino and Gevgelija to the border, then the Greek A1/E75 straight into Thessaloniki, with a small toll of a few euros on the Greek side.
The driver comes in via the ring road and drops you right at your address or hotel. The one exception is the old town, Ano Poli, where the last few hundred metres through the narrowest lanes are on foot — cars simply don't fit through there.
The border crossing and what documents you need
The crossing is Bogorodica–Evzoni. Normally it takes about 30 minutes, but at the summer peak, especially afternoons in July and August, queues can stretch to 2 hours each way — that time adds on top of ≈ 3 h and depends heavily on the day and hour you travel.
Greece is in the Schengen area, so a valid passport is required — an ID card is not enough, even the newer one reading "North Macedonia", which is only accepted at the neighbouring borders of Kosovo, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. On first entry, border officers take fingerprints and a facial photo for the EES system, fully operational at every Schengen border since April 2026. ETIAS is not yet required.
Travellers holding other passports should check their own country's entry rules for Greece, since these can differ from what applies to Macedonian citizens.
The old town, the walls and the waterfront
Fifteen Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Rotunda, a circular Roman-era building, is often compared to the Pantheon in Rome, and the Church of Agios Dimitrios, a five-aisled basilica dedicated to the city's patron saint, is one of the largest churches in Greece. Up in Ano Poli, above the modern city, the surviving walls and the country's only preserved Byzantine baths still stand.
Down by the sea, the White Tower is the city's landmark, and the long waterfront promenade runs from it toward Aristotelous Square. The Ladadika district and Modiano market are the places to eat and shop for spices, fish and cheese, and the Archaeological and Byzantine Culture museums sit right next to the exhibition grounds.
Planning your visit
One day covers the old town and the waterfront; two days leave room for the museums and a slower walk through Ano Poli. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking, while summer brings heat and heavier traffic. Check current opening hours for the museums before you set off.
Thessaloniki pairs easily with another day on the beaches of Halkidiki, just about an hour further along the same road, or with a pickup at Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) if you're continuing your trip by air.
Taxi or bus to Thessaloniki
A bus runs from Skopje to Thessaloniki, with one daily departure around 17:00 and a fare of roughly 20 EUR per person. For a group or family, one fixed price per vehicle, not per person, usually works out cheaper and more comfortable, with no transfer and no waiting at the bus station with luggage.
