The drive from Skopje to Kassandra
The trip covers 319 km and takes ≈ 4 h 20 min under normal conditions. The route runs on the A1/E75 motorway through Veles, Negotino and Gevgelija to the border, the same motorway on to the Thessaloniki ring road, then the road toward Nea Moudania and down the Kassandra peninsula.
Past the bridge over the Nea Potidea canal, where the peninsula technically becomes an island, the road runs through Afitos, Kallithea, Polychrono and Hanioti before reaching Pefkochori. It's a single road the length of the peninsula, so on summer weekends, especially afternoons, it can get busy — the driver drops you right at your hotel or house address.
The border crossing and what documents you need
The crossing is Bogorodica–Evzoni. Normally it takes about 30 minutes, but at the summer peak, especially in July and August, queues can stretch to 2 hours each way — with kids and beach bags in the car, it's worth budgeting that as extra time on top of ≈ 4 h 20 min, not the best case.
Greece is in the Schengen area, so a valid passport is required — an ID card is not enough, even the newer one reading "North Macedonia". On first entry, border officers take fingerprints and a facial photo for the EES system, fully operational at every Schengen border since April 2026. ETIAS is not yet required.
Travellers holding other passports should check their own country's entry rules for Greece before the trip.
The beaches and what's worth seeing
Kallithea is Kassandra's liveliest hub, with nightlife and its longest beach; Polychrono, between Kriopigi and Hanioti, is quieter and family-friendly; Pefkochori, on the peninsula's southeastern tip, pairs a beach with an evening stroll through town. The bridge over the Nea Potidea canal gives a view of the sea on both sides.
The Tower of Saint Paul in Nea Fokea, a Byzantine defence tower from 1407, stands above the harbour. Inland, Petralona Cave, where one of the oldest human skulls in Europe was found in 1959, makes a good break from the beach. On clear days, Mount Athos is visible from the higher parts of the peninsula, and boat trips along its coast leave from Ouranoupoli.
When to go and how long to stay
The season runs roughly from May to September, with July and August the hottest and busiest — both the road and the border are more congested then. June and September bring warm water with fewer crowds and an easier drive. Budget a few days to a week for a beach stay; for a day trip, one day is enough for Kallithea or Polychrono with an evening drive back.
The trip pairs easily with a day in Thessaloniki, about an hour further along the same road, for the old town and museums before or after the beach.
Taxi or bus to Kassandra
There's no direct bus from Skopje to Kassandra — the trip means a bus to Thessaloniki, then a transfer onto a local route toward Nea Moudania or Kallithea, for a total journey of roughly 6 to 7 hours and around 30 to 45 EUR per person for the whole trip.

The return trip and onward travel
The trip back from Kassandra to Skopje is booked in the same request — just give us the pickup time and address.
