The drive to the airport

From Skopje the route runs on the A1 motorway through Kumanovo, over the Deve Bair mountain pass, and on through southwestern Bulgaria to Sofia — about 250 km and ≈ 3 h 35 min in total. The airport sits east of the city centre, and Sofia's ring road lets the driver reach the terminal without cutting through downtown traffic.

The airport has two terminals — Terminal 1 (mostly low-cost carriers) and Terminal 2 (most other airlines, also connected to the M4 metro line) — with a free shuttle running between them every 30 to 40 minutes. Tell us your terminal when booking and the driver drops you right at the entrance.

Border crossing and documents

Bulgaria is in the Schengen area, so a valid passport is required — an ID card isn't enough. On first entry (including at Deve Bair–Gyueshevo), non-EU citizens, Macedonian nationals included, are registered in the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) with fingerprints and a photo taken at the border.

Deve Bair is open 24/7 and usually moves quickly, but waits stretch out on Friday afternoons and during the summer peak — build in extra margin beyond the usual ≈ 3 h 35 min, especially when a flight is on the line. ETIAS is not yet in force. Travellers on other passports should check their own country's entry rules for Bulgaria in advance.

Timing it for an early flight

Airlines recommend being at the airport 2 to 3 hours before an international departure. Count backward: ≈ 3 h 35 min of driving, plus a margin for the Deve Bair crossing, which can vary, plus that 2-3 hour buffer — for a 6 a.m. flight, that often means leaving Skopje around midnight or in the very early hours.

Because the border isn't always predictable, it's safer to build in that extra margin for an early flight rather than count on the fastest possible crossing.

Why fly from Sofia

Low-cost carriers such as Wizz Air and Ryanair fly direct from Sofia to dozens of cities across Europe, often at fares below comparable flights from Skopje, with a noticeably wider choice of direct destinations. For travellers starting in Skopje, that frequently means a cheaper ticket even after the cost of the transfer to Sofia.

The bigger airport and wider airline base also make it a practical choice for business travel on short booking notice.

Landing back

On the way home, a driver is waiting after you land in Sofia or Skopje at a time agreed in advance — we don't offer a name-sign meet or flight tracking at an airport abroad, but the assigned driver's name and phone number are sent to you ahead of time, so you can call directly once you're through passport control.

If the flight runs late, call the number you were sent — the booking stays the same, only the pickup time shifts.

Taxi or bus

Buses from Skopje (FlixBus, Matpu) end at Sofia's central bus station, not at the airport — you'd need a second leg to the terminal, with extra waiting and cost. Bus lines 84 and 184 or the M4 metro connect the airport to the centre, but that's another change with luggage in hand.
