Before you fly

How early to arrive at Skopje Airport for your flight home

The airport's own advice on how early to arrive at Skopje Airport is at least 2 hours before departure, and that's the right answer for most flights. Check-in usually opens 120 minutes before departure and closes 40 minutes before a European flight, so the 2 hours give you time for the queue, passport control and security without running. Below: what happens between the door and the gate, the very early morning departures, free-flow drive times from Kumanovo, Tetovo, Gostivar and Pristina, what parking and dropping someone off cost, and where to spend your last denars.

Information checked

Check-in opens 2 hours before departure

Skopje International Airport (SKP) recommends arriving at least 120 minutes before departure. Check-in counters normally open 120 minutes before the flight and sometimes 180 minutes before, at the airline's request or when there are extra document checks. Work backwards from your departure time: for a 10:00 flight, be at the terminal by 08:00, and add your drive time and a buffer for traffic on top.

The deadlines are strict. If you miss them you can lose the flight even if you're standing in the building.

  • Check-in closes 40 minutes before departure for flights within Europe.
  • Check-in closes 60 minutes before departure for intercontinental flights.
  • Be at the gate 30 minutes before a European flight, 45 minutes before an intercontinental one.
  • The airport's departures guide advises reaching the gate 45 minutes before any flight; boarding usually starts 30 to 45 minutes before departure.

Skopje Airport check-in time, bag drop and security

Departures use the ground floor of the same terminal you arrived in, at the east end: the check-in counters face entrance doors C and D. Check in online if your airline allows it. With hand luggage only, go straight to the pre-boarding e-gates in the centre of the terminal, next to the information desk, and scan your boarding pass, printed or on your phone.

Wizz Air passengers with a checked bag can use the self-service bag drop kiosks by counter 19, except on London Luton flights. You check in online, scan the boarding pass, tag the bag and send it off; the kiosks take bags from 4 hours to 40 minutes before departure. Everyone else uses the staffed counters.

After the e-gates come customs, passport control and the security check. North Macedonia is outside the Schengen Area, so you get an exit passport check. If you're a non-EU national travelling for a short stay and fly into a Schengen country, you'll be registered in the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) when you land there. At security, liquids in your cabin bag must be in containers of 100 ml or less inside one resealable 1-litre plastic bag, and all electronic devices come out of the bag into the tray.

Catching an early-morning flight from Skopje

Skopje has a busy early wave. In the winter 2026/27 timetable, Air Serbia leaves for Belgrade at 04:00 every day, Austrian Airlines for Vienna at 04:30 and Aegean for Athens at 04:45 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, followed by a run of mostly Wizz Air departures from about 05:25 to 06:45. For a 06:00 flight that means being at the terminal by 04:00, and leaving the city centre around 03:30.

Plan the journey before the night. The airport shuttle bus runs a few night departures from the city, but in the winter timetable the last one before dawn leaves between about 02:30 and 03:30 on most days, and at 04:00 or 04:30 only on Saturdays and Fridays, with nothing then until about 07:30 or later. Our guide to the airport bus has the full timetable. If the bus leaves you with hours to kill at the terminal, a car at a fixed €28 per vehicle, with no night surcharge, is on our airport page; book it ahead, especially for the early flights.

At that hour the terminal is open (Skopje Airport runs 24/7), the departures-hall exchange office opens at 03:30 and the tobacco and souvenir shop at 04:00.

Drive times from Tetovo, Kumanovo, Gostivar and Pristina

Many people flying home from Skopje start in another town. These are free-flow driving times from OpenStreetMap routing between each town centre and the terminal. They don't include traffic, stops or, for Pristina, the border, so add a margin.

For Pristina, the time at the Blace crossing comes on top and varies; our page on cross-border transfers explains the crossing. From Skopje city centre the drive is short, and our airport page covers it. Flying home from Ohrid? The Ohrid route page explains how the drive back to Skopje Airport is added as the return leg when you book the trip from Skopje Airport to Ohrid.

  • Kumanovo: about 24 km by the motorway and around 20 minutes (the official airport taxi tariff counts 31 km).
  • Tetovo: about 73 km and around 52 minutes.
  • Gostivar: about 97 km and around 75 minutes.
  • Pristina: about 113 km and around 90 minutes before the border wait.

Skopje Airport parking and Hug & Fly drop-off

The main car park is directly opposite the terminal. Pay at the machines next to doors A and C with a card or cash in denars; the car park office is in the arrivals hall, left of door A. Prices below are for vehicles under 2.80 m, VAT included; taller vehicles pay double, and a lost ticket costs 3,500 MKD.

If someone is just dropping you off, use the Hug & Fly lane in front of the terminal. The first 10 minutes are free; 10 to 20 minutes cost 500 MKD, 20 to 40 minutes 1,000 MKD, 40 to 60 minutes 1,500 MKD and each extra hour 2,000 MKD. For anything longer than a quick goodbye, the car park is far cheaper.

  • Up to 1 hour: 100 MKD; 2 hours: 150 MKD; 3 hours: 200 MKD; 4 hours: 300 MKD.
  • 4 to 6 hours: 400 MKD; 6 to 8 hours: 500 MKD; 8 to 24 hours: 1,000 MKD.
  • 3 to 5 days: 3,500 MKD; 5 to 7 days: 4,500 MKD; each extra day: 400 MKD.

Shops, lounge and pharmacy on the departures level

Once you're through security, gates 201 to 206 are on the first floor, together with duty free and the business lounge; gates 101 to 105 on the ground floor are bus gates, where a bus takes you to the aircraft. The duty-free shops are by gate 203. The lounge is the Primeclass Lounge; the airport doesn't list its hours or access price on its own page, so check with Primeclass or your airline.

Before security, in the public part of the departures hall, the Zegin pharmacy is open 08:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday, and the information desk and some restaurants are open around the clock. Check the screens for your gate number.

Changing leftover denars before you fly

Change spare denars before security, because the exchange offices are all landside. The International Currency Exchange office in the departures hall opens from 03:30 to 20:00, and its office in the arrivals hall, at the other end of the same floor, is open 24/7. The Halk Bank branch in the arrivals hall opens Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00.

If you're coming back next year, keeping a few hundred denars for the airport bus or a coffee on arrival is a reasonable alternative. For the trip back to the airport itself, the fixed-price car from the city can be booked as soon as your return flight is.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I get to Skopje Airport for my flight?

At least 2 hours before departure, which is what the airport recommends. Check-in counters usually open 120 minutes before the flight, sometimes 180, and close 40 minutes before departure for flights within Europe and 60 minutes before for intercontinental flights. Add your drive time and a margin for traffic, and more if your airline says its counters open earlier.

When does check-in open and close at Skopje Airport, and how long does security take?

Check-in normally opens 120 minutes before departure and can open 180 minutes before. It closes 40 minutes before European flights and 60 minutes before intercontinental ones. The airport publishes no security waiting times. After check-in you pass the e-gates, customs, passport control and security, so aim to finish check-in well before the deadline and reach the gate 45 minutes before departure.

What time should I leave for a 05:00 or 06:00 flight from Skopje?

Plan to be at the terminal 2 hours before departure, so 03:00 for a 05:00 flight or 04:00 for a 06:00 flight, and leave the city centre about half an hour earlier. In the winter timetable the airport bus has a few night departures, usually the last between about 02:30 and 03:30, then none until about 07:30 or later, so check it carefully or arrange a car in advance.

How long is the drive to Skopje Airport from Tetovo, Kumanovo, Gostivar or Pristina?

In free-flowing traffic, about 20 minutes from Kumanovo, 52 minutes from Tetovo, 75 minutes from Gostivar and 90 minutes from Pristina, plus the wait at the Blace border crossing. These come from OpenStreetMap routing and leave out traffic and stops, so add a margin, especially on summer weekends and around holidays.

How much does parking at Skopje Airport cost?

In the car park opposite the terminal, 1 hour costs 100 MKD, 8 to 24 hours 1,000 MKD, 3 to 5 days 3,500 MKD and 5 to 7 days 4,500 MKD, then 400 MKD a day. Vehicles over 2.80 m pay double. Pay at the machines by doors A and C with a card or denars; a lost ticket costs 3,500 MKD.

Is it free to drop someone off at Skopje Airport?

Yes, for up to 10 minutes in the Hug & Fly lane in front of the terminal. After that it's 500 MKD for 10 to 20 minutes, 1,000 MKD for 20 to 40 minutes, 1,500 MKD for 40 to 60 minutes and 2,000 MKD for each extra hour. If whoever drives you wants to come inside, the car park is much cheaper.

Are there shops, a lounge and a pharmacy at Skopje Airport departures?

Yes. Airside on the first floor you'll find duty free by gate 203 and the Primeclass business lounge; check its hours and access with Primeclass or your airline. Before security, the Zegin pharmacy in the departures hall is open 08:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday, and the information desk and some restaurants are open around the clock.

Where can I change leftover denars at Skopje Airport?

At the International Currency Exchange offices before security: the one in the departures hall opens from 03:30 to 20:00, and the one in the arrivals hall on the same floor is open 24/7. There is no exchange listed airside, so change your denars before you go through passport control and security.
