Skopje Airport Bus and Car Rental: Getting into Town on Your Own

The Skopje airport bus is the official shuttle between Skopje International Airport (SKP) and the city: 199 MKD one way, three stops in town and departures timed to flights, including one or two after midnight. For one or two people travelling light it's the low-cost way in. This guide covers tickets, stops and the timetable, then the other ways to reach Skopje on your own: the car rental desks at the terminal, why there's no Uber or Bolt and why the train isn't an option. We checked everything on 1 November 2026; the operator changes the timetable with the seasons, so look again before you fly.

Information checked

The Skopje airport bus at a glance

Follow the signs for the airport shuttle bus. On the airport's terminal map the bus stands at the kerb outside exit A, at the arrivals end of the building, a few steps from where you come out of customs.

  • Fare: 199 MKD one way; no return fare is published.
  • City stops: Hotel Continental, the Central Bus Station and the Holiday Inn.
  • At the airport: outside arrivals exit A; for the trip back the operator calls the stop 'Terminal Departures'.
  • Timetable: planned around flight arrivals and departures, with 7 to 8 departures a day from the airport in the winter 2026/27 timetable.
  • Journey time: about 25 minutes according to Wikivoyage; the operator doesn't publish one.
  • Tickets: airport desk 08:00–20:00, on the bus 20:00–08:00, Central Bus Station 24/7, or online.

Where to buy a ticket and how to pay

During the day, buy your ticket at the shuttle bus desk in the arrivals hall, which is open 08:00–20:00. Between 20:00 and 08:00 the desk is closed and you pay on the bus instead. In the city, the counter at the Central Bus Station sells tickets around the clock, which is handy for the trip back to the airport, and the operator's website links to an online booking page if you'd rather have the ticket on your phone.

You can pay cash in Macedonian denars (MKD) or by credit or debit card; if you pay cash, the operator asks you to keep the fiscal receipt. Euros aren't listed as a payment option, so if you only carry euros, pay by card or change a small amount first. The arrivals hall has ATMs and a currency exchange office open 24/7, and our step-by-step guide to the terminal shows where they are.

The fare is per person and per trip. Four travellers pay four tickets, 796 MKD in total, which is worth knowing when you compare the bus with options priced per vehicle.

The three city stops

The bus serves three stops in Skopje: Hotel Continental on Boulevard Aleksandar Makedonski, the Central Bus Station at Nikola Karev 20 and the Holiday Inn at Filip Vtori Makedonski 5. Wikivoyage describes the route as passing Capitol Mall, the bus station and the Holiday Inn. The operator doesn't publish the order of stops for each direction, so tell the driver where you want to get off when you board.

According to Wikivoyage, the Central Bus Station shares a transport centre with Skopje's railway station, and it is where intercity buses leave from. If you're heading on to the lake, our Skopje Airport to Ohrid page compares the bus with a direct car.

From any stop you still have the last stretch to your accommodation: a walk, or a taxi ordered in the iSplit app. Work out which stop is nearest your address before you land, so you aren't doing it on the pavement with your bags.

The timetable, including night departures

Because the timetable follows the flights, departures are spread unevenly rather than at a fixed interval, and they differ by weekday. The winter 2026/27 timetable took effect on 25 October 2026. From the airport it has 7 to 8 departures a day in total: one or two between midnight and about 03:30, and the rest from about 08:00 until the early evening (the last one leaves between about 17:45 and 19:30, depending on the day).

Two gaps matter. Nothing leaves the airport between about 19:30 and midnight, and nothing between about 03:30 and 07:50. Several flights land in the late evening in the winter schedule, so if yours is one of them, expect a long wait for the next bus or plan another way in; our guide to landing late at night covers what stays open in the terminal.

The operator doesn't explain whether a 00:00 departure listed under a weekday belongs to the night that day starts or the one it ends, so if you land around midnight, check with the operator before you fly. Wikivoyage reports that buses leave about 15 to 30 minutes after a landing, which fits a flight-based timetable, but the operator doesn't say whether a bus waits for a delayed flight.

Buses also run from the city to the airport, with 7 to 9 departures a day in the winter timetable, including runs between midnight and about 04:30 for the early-morning wave of departing flights. For timing your trip back, see our guide to flying home from Skopje. The timetable changes with the season, so check the bus page on the airport's website, skp.airports.com.mk, for the link to the timetable valid on your travel dates, especially for a summer trip.

Journey time, the road and your luggage

Wikivoyage puts the bus ride at about 25 minutes. Neither the operator nor the airport publishes a journey time, and we found no source for rush-hour conditions, so leave some slack if you have a connection to catch at the bus station. The airport is in Petrovec municipality, east-southeast of the centre, and the road in follows the motorway before turning onto Boulevard Aleksandar Makedonski. For the road distance and the drive time by car, see our Skopje Airport page.

Neither the operator nor the airport publishes luggage rules for the shuttle. If you're carrying something bulky, such as skis, a bike or a pushchair, ask at the bus desk before you buy a ticket rather than at the door of the bus.

Skopje Airport car rental desks

The airport lists 23 rent-a-car agencies, from international chains to local firms. Their desks line the west wall of the arrivals hall. Most list opening hours of 00:00–24:00 and a few open 08:00–24:00, so if you land after midnight, check that your company's desk is one of the round-the-clock ones. Rental cars are returned at the drop-off area at the west end of the car park opposite the terminal.

Car rental (car hire, if you're from the UK) makes sense if you're touring the country, heading for the mountains or visiting several towns on your own schedule. For a stay in Skopje itself it earns its keep less often: most city trips are short, and you'd be paying for parking and finding your way through unfamiliar traffic for journeys a city taxi or your own feet would cover.

Uber and Bolt in Skopje

Neither Uber nor Bolt operates in North Macedonia, as far as their own city lists show (checked 1 November 2026). Uber's list of cities has no North Macedonia, and Bolt's has no North Macedonia section. Bolt advertised for drivers in Skopje in 2023, but as Meta.mk reported at the time, it said it would announce when it actually starts. Don't count on either app when you land.

That leaves the authorised taxi rank outside the terminal, the airport bus and a car booked before you fly. If you need to get online on arrival, the airport has free Wi-Fi on the 'TAV Airports' network.

For the last stretch from a bus stop to your accommodation, order a taxi in the iSplit app, which books rides around Skopje in a few steps. The authorised taxi rank at the terminal and its fixed price list are explained on our airport page, together with how a pre-booked car compares.

No train, and no city bus to the terminal

No train serves the airport. The airport's own 'To & From the Airport' pages cover only the bus, taxis and car rental. Wikivoyage mentions two railway stations 6 to 9 km away, Miladinovci and Oreshani, with local trains to Skopje, but that's a long walk or a taxi ride with luggage, and Wikivoyage itself says you'd need luck for a train to match your arrival.

No city bus line is listed for the terminal either. Wikivoyage notes regular buses into Skopje from Petrovec, a village 3.8 km south of the airport on foot, for 50 MKD cash. That works only if you're travelling with light bags and have daylight for the walk; for everyone else the airport bus is the public transport option.

Bus or taxi: when the airport bus makes sense

The bus is a good choice when you're one or two people with manageable luggage, your flight lands within the timetable and you're staying near one of the three stops. At 199 MKD a person it's the low-cost way in, and the ride is short.

In the situations below, a car waiting for you is usually worth it. We offer a pre-booked private car from the airport to Skopje city for €32, one fixed price per vehicle rather than per passenger; the details, the taxi rank alternative and booking are on our Skopje Airport transfer page.

The bus makes less sense when:

  • You land in the evening gap after about 19:30, or in the early-morning gap after 03:30.
  • You're a family or group, because every passenger pays for a ticket.
  • You're travelling with small children, a lot of luggage or bulky items.
  • Your accommodation is far from all three stops, so you'd need a second ride anyway.
  • You're continuing straight to another town such as Tetovo, Kumanovo or Ohrid.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Skopje airport bus ticket, and where do I buy it?

A one-way ticket costs 199 MKD; no return fare is published. Buy it at the shuttle bus desk in the arrivals hall between 08:00 and 20:00, on the bus between 20:00 and 08:00, at the Central Bus Station counter at any hour, or online. Pay cash in denars (keep the fiscal receipt) or by card.

Where does the airport bus stop in Skopje?

At Hotel Continental on Boulevard Aleksandar Makedonski, the Central Bus Station (Nikola Karev 20) and the Holiday Inn (Filip Vtori Makedonski 5). At the airport it leaves from the kerb outside arrivals exit A.

Does the airport bus run at night?

Partly. The winter 2026/27 timetable has one or two departures from the airport between midnight and 03:30, and none between about 19:30 and midnight or between 03:30 and about 07:50. After 20:00 you buy your ticket on the bus.

How long does the airport bus take?

About 25 minutes, according to Wikivoyage. The operator doesn't publish a journey time, so allow extra for traffic and for the wait between landing and the next departure.

Which car rental companies have desks at Skopje Airport?

The airport's rent-a-car page lists 23 agencies, international chains as well as local firms. The desks are in the arrivals hall and most are open around the clock; a few open 08:00–24:00.

Is there Uber in Skopje, or Bolt?

No. Neither Uber's nor Bolt's city list includes North Macedonia (checked 1 November 2026). At the airport, use the authorised taxi rank, the airport bus or a car booked in advance.

Is there a train from Skopje Airport?

No. There's no rail link and no city bus line to the terminal. The nearest railway stations, Miladinovci and Oreshani, are 6 to 9 km away, and the village bus from Petrovec (50 MKD, per Wikivoyage) starts 3.8 km from the terminal.

Skopje airport bus or taxi: which should I choose?

Take the bus if you're travelling light, alone or as a couple, and you land within the timetable. If you arrive in a timetable gap, travel as a family or group, or are staying away from the three stops, a car is easier; our airport page compares the taxi rank with a pre-booked car at one fixed price per vehicle.

Want a car waiting when you land?

One fixed price per vehicle. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign. Send the request and we email you as soon as your driver is confirmed.
