The drive from Skopje

Most of the route runs on the A2 motorway through Tetovo, a proper dual carriageway for almost the whole way, so the drive is steady with few slowdowns. Just before Gostivar the road drops past the Vardar springs at Vrutok, and the last stretch into town is an ordinary city street. The car drops you right at the old bazaar or at whichever address you've given — parking in central Gostivar is rarely an issue.

The old bazaar, clock tower and stone bridge

Gostivar's old bazaar is a warren of narrow lanes lined with craft workshops and textile stalls, still busy on weekday mornings. The clock tower and the remains of the old stone bridge over the river are the clearest surviving marks of the town's Ottoman-era layout, and a handful of mosques from the same period stand nearby. It's an easy half-hour walk from the bazaar to the central square and back.

Vrutok and Šar Mountain

A few kilometres north of town, at Vrutok, the Vardar — the country's longest river — rises straight out of the rock at the foot of Šar Mountain. Trout ponds have worked the spring water here for decades, and the view up toward the mountain is reason enough for many travellers to stop on the way in. Gostivar also sits at the crossroads for the road up to Popova Šapka and the road on toward Mavrovo.

Gostivar works as a pleasant stop any time of year; the bazaar is liveliest in the morning and early afternoon while the shops are open. Half a day covers the town itself, and many travellers combine it with Mavrovo, Popova Šapka or Tetovo the same day, since all three are a short drive further on. Bring water and a hat in summer; in winter, the roads on toward the mountains call for winter tyres.

Taxi or bus

The Skopje–Gostivar bus route is frequent, with dozens of departures a day and most of the trip on the motorway, so it's a reasonable option for one traveller with light luggage. But the bus stops at the station on the edge of town, not at your hotel or door, and the fare multiplies with every extra passenger. A private car sized to your group — a car for up to 3 or a van for 4–8 — drives straight to your address, and waits on your schedule rather than a timetable.

The return trip and onward day trips

Book the same-day return to Skopje in the same request — the driver waits on site for up to 6 hours, the first hour free and every started hour after that charged, with the return leg discounted; the booking form shows the exact total before you confirm. A later return is booked as a separate one-way transfer at the normal price. If your day continues toward Mavrovo, Popova Šapka or St. Jovan Bigorski Monastery, the driver can take you straight on instead of back to Skopje — just name the final destination when you book.
