The drive from Skopje

Nearby, by the old stone footbridge over the Pena river, stands the Arabati Baba Tekke - a Bektashi complex from 1538, once a resting place for travellers on the road to Istanbul, now open to visitors with its courtyards and several buildings.
Above the city, in the Šar Mountains, is the Popova Šapka ski resort, about 18 to 20 km away - good for hiking in summer, skiing in winter.

The town centre, the mosque and the tekke are open daily; check current information for the tekke's exact hours, since it's an active religious site. Half a day to a full day covers the old town and both landmarks; add another hour of driving up into the mountains and you can fold in a trip to Popova Šapka for a longer day out from Skopje.

Skopje-Tetovo is one of the busiest domestic routes - buses run roughly every two hours through the day, taking about 40 to 45 minutes.
