Skopje to Strumica: a Private Door-to-Door Transfer

The drive from Skopje

The route runs the A4 corridor through Petrovec and Sveti Nikole to Štip, then the newer express road toward Radoviš before joining a regional road into Strumica. The Štip–Radoviš stretch has been upgraded in phases over recent years, so part of the drive is modern express road and part is still a standard two-lane regional road. Budget ≈ 1 h 55 min for the 137 km, a little more if you catch Štip at rush hour.

Carnival city, fortress and old town

Strumica is best known for its carnival, first recorded by the Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi in 1670 and likely older still. In the days before Orthodox Lent, the city fills with masks, music and processions, centred on the clock-tower square with its statue of the 'Masked Strumica Citizen'.

West of the centre, on a hilltop, sit the ruins of Tsar Samuil's fortress; excavations under the walls found habitation layers thousands of years deep, and restoration work has been ongoing for over a decade. The square, the 1920s municipal building and the old streets around them make for an easy walk before or after the monasteries.

Vodoča and Veljusa — frescoes below Belasica

Vodoča Monastery, first recorded in 1018, was once the seat of the Strumica diocese; its frescoes from that period rank among the oldest surviving examples of Byzantine painting in the country. Veljusa, built in 1080, is one of the rare churches never destroyed or rebuilt — inside the dome, Christ is painted as a twelve-year-old child, an unusual choice, and the monastery keeps its own carved Veljusa cross.

Both sit a few minutes' drive from the centre, with a paved approach close to the entrance.

When to go and what to pair it with

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the old town and the monasteries; summer brings the full heat of the southern basin. Bansko village, with its Roman-era thermal baths and hot spring, is worth an overnight rather than a same-day dash. Opening hours at the monasteries and the spa shift with the season, so check current hours before you set off.

Strumica is also the natural base for the Smolare and Kolešino waterfalls on Mount Belasica, about half an hour's drive away — monasteries and town in the morning, a waterfall in the afternoon, is one of the most common day-trip patterns from Skopje.

Taxi vs. the bus

The Skopje–Strumica bus leaves the Transport Centre several times a day and takes noticeably longer than driving, with stops along the way. For one traveller it's the cheaper option; for a family or group travelling together, the private car is a fixed price per vehicle - from €160 by car for up to 3 passengers, or €195 by van for 4-8 - with a drop-off at the exact address you need, not just the bus station.

The return leg and onward trips

Book the return to Skopje for the same day - the driver can wait up to 6 hours, the first hour free and each further started hour billed, with the return leg itself discounted; the booking form shows the exact total. A later return is booked as a separate one-way transfer at the normal price. If you're continuing further southeast, Strumica is a convenient base for a side trip to Lake Dojran.
