Kumanovo is North Macedonia's second-largest town, a multi-ethnic crossroads on the road to Serbia and Bulgaria. A private car takes you straight from Skopje to any address in town, no transfers, and can bring you back or continue on toward Kokino and Kriva Palanka the same day.
The drive from Skopje
The A1 motorway runs north out of Skopje flat and fast, with no serious bends before Kumanovo's own exit ramp drops you straight into town. There's no need to park outside the centre or walk in - the driver takes you to the exact address, hotel or office you gave when booking, in about ≈ 40 min.
The old town and its landmarks
The old bazaar and the Eski (Old) Mosque, built in 1532, are worth a short walk through the centre. On the Zebrnjak hill outside town stands the memorial ossuary to the 1912 Battle of Kumanovo, with views across the whole plain. About 13 km east is the Monastery of St. George at Staro Nagoričane, built under King Milutin, with 14th-century frescoes on UNESCO's tentative list.
Kumanovo also hosts a carnival every February, one of the country's liveliest street festivals, with costumed processions through the centre.
Planning your visit
The town runs year-round; the bazaar and mosque are open daily, while the Staro Nagoričane monastery is an active church, so check current hours before you go. Half a day covers the centre and the memorial hill comfortably; add another hour of driving and you can fold in the Kokino observatory for a longer combined day trip from Skopje.
Taxi vs. bus
Skopje-Kumanovo is one of the busiest domestic routes - buses run roughly every 30 to 60 minutes through the day, about half an hour each way, plus a handful of daily trains that are slower and less frequent. That's fine for one traveller, but for a family or a small group with luggage, or a meeting at a set time, a private car works out cheaper per person and goes straight to the door instead of a bus station.
The return trip and onward day trips
