Kratovo is the only town in the country built inside the crater of an extinct volcano, known for its medieval stone towers and bridges. A private car from Skopje takes you straight to the centre, and the same driver can bring you back or continue on to Kuklica and Cocev Kamen.
The drive to Kratovo

Kratovo is a good base for a longer day out in the northeast - Kuklica is only a short drive off, and Cocev Kamen or Lesnovo Monastery can be folded into the same day with an earlier start. Spring and autumn give the most comfortable temperatures for the town's steep streets.

A few buses a day run from Skopje's bus station to Kratovo, taking around two hours. That works fine for one traveller with no fixed schedule, but for a group with luggage, or if you plan to continue the same day to Kuklica and Cocev Kamen - places with no public transport at all - a private taxi is effectively the only way to do it without losing time to transfers.
