The drive up to Ponikva
It's 121 km from Skopje to Ponikva, and the drive takes about ≈ 1 h 50 min. The route follows the same road as Štip and Kočani — mostly motorway — before the last roughly 20 km climb from Kočani up onto Plačkovica, a paved mountain road with bends, slower going but open all year.

The forest turns warm colours in autumn, and summer temperatures up here are noticeably more comfortable than down on the plain.

A winter weekend at Ponikva makes sense if you want skiing or a snow day trip without driving out to the bigger resorts.
