Skopje to Heraclea Lyncestis: a private transfer at one fixed price

The drive from Skopje to Heraclea

The car takes the A1 motorway to Veles, then continues on the Gradsko–Prilep–Bitola expressway. The site sits right on the southern edge of Bitola, a few minutes' drive from the center, with a paved approach and a car park next to the entrance — no walking over rough ground.

The whole trip takes ≈ 3 h 25 min over about 177 km, and the driver can drop you directly at the ticket office rather than in central Bitola.

The mosaics, the amphitheater and the basilica

The city was founded by Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC and named for Heracles. It later became a stop on the Via Egnatia and the seat of a bishopric. The Great Basilica holds a mosaic floor of about 1,300 square meters — floral patterns and animals, among the best preserved in the region.

The amphitheater, originally a Hellenistic theater and later used for gladiator fights under Roman rule, still shows the tunnels beneath its seating. The site itself is small — about an hour is enough to see it, unless you want to linger over the mosaics.

Planning the visit

The mosaics are covered over winter to protect them, so spring through autumn is the best time to visit, when they're uncovered. Entry costs around 120 denars, and opening hours shift with the season — check current hours before you go.

The site pairs easily with central Bitola (Širok Sokak is about a 20-minute walk away) and with Pelister National Park, another 20-minute drive — a realistic one-day plan is Heraclea in the morning, Bitola in the afternoon.

The paths through the site are flat and step-free, workable for older visitors and children alike, and information panels by the main finds mean you don't strictly need a guide. Photography is generally allowed, though current on-site rules may restrict it in a few areas.

Taxi vs bus

There's no bus line running to the site itself — buses from Skopje stop in central Bitola, from where you'd still need to walk or find local transport. A private car goes straight to the entrance with no transfers, and the price is fixed per vehicle, not per passenger.

The return trip and going onward

The trip back to Skopje is booked in the same request. For a same-day return, the driver waits up to 6 hours — the first hour free, then charged per hour started, with the return leg discounted; a later return is booked as a separate one-way transfer at the normal price. Just give a pickup time at the site. If your day continues on to Pelister or Lake Prespa, the driver can pick you up directly from Heraclea instead of routing back through the city center first.
