The drive to the monastery

The route runs on the A2 motorway to Gostivar, then continues on the road toward Mavrovo and Debar, alongside the Radika River canyon. A short paved side road, about two kilometres from the village of Rostuše, leads straight to the car park in front of the monastery gate — no walk required. The whole route is open year-round, with winter tyres needed on part of it in winter. The Radika Canyon here runs for more than 25 kilometres between the Šar, Korab and Bistra mountains, with a few pull-offs for the view over the river.

History and the iconostasis

The monastery was founded around 1020, destroyed by the Ottomans in the 16th century, and rebuilt in 1743; a fire damaged part of the complex in 2009 and it was later restored. The wood-carved iconostasis, carved between 1829 and 1835 by Mijak master carvers including Petre Filipov-Garkata from Gari and Makarij Frčkovski from Galičnik, is considered one of the finest examples of the craft in the region. Some of the icons inside are several centuries old, including a gilded icon believed to date back to the 11th century.

Visiting the monastery

Ordinary monastery etiquette applies — covered shoulders and knees, a quiet voice inside the church — and the monks sometimes give brief explanations to visitors. It's open most of the year, but check current hours before you go, especially around major feast days when visitor numbers rise. The monastery grounds also have a quiet spot to rest with a view over the canyon. Photography inside the church is generally discouraged, though the courtyard and outer walls are fine to photograph.

Plan your visit

An hour to ninety minutes covers the monastery on its own, and most visitors combine it with Lake Mavrovo, the Zare Lazarevski ski centre or Debar's spas the same day, since all are a short drive further along the same road. Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable weather for walking the grounds, while winter dresses the canyon walls in snow. Weekdays are quieter than weekends and feast days, when organised groups also arrive.

Taxi or bus

Buses to Debar via Gostivar and Mavrovo stop in Rostuše, leaving roughly a twenty-minute walk along the road to the monastery gate, and departures thin out outside the morning hours. A private car from Skopje drives straight to the gate, with no walk and no waiting for the next bus back.

Return and continuing to Debar

Book the return to Skopje in the same request — the driver can wait up to 6 hours at a discounted rate, the first hour free and then billed per started hour, while a later return is booked as a separate one-way transfer at the normal price. If your day continues to Mavrovo, Debar or the Kosovrasti and Banjište spas, the driver can carry straight on instead of turning back — just name the final destination when you book.
