Vevčani is a mountain village above the Struga plain, known for ice-cold springs in a rocky gorge and for its Old New Year carnival. A private transfer from Skopje takes you straight to the entrance of the springs park, with the same car waiting to bring you back once you've walked around.
The drive from Skopje
The route reaches Struga via the A2 motorway through Tetovo, Gostivar and Kičevo; the final stretch toward Trebeništa is still partly under upgrade, with single-lane sections in places. From Struga, a local road runs through Vraništa and Velešta before turning and climbing toward Vevčani — narrow and winding all the way up.
Cars park at the entrance to the springs park, where the road becomes too narrow for vehicles. From there, the springs themselves and the older houses in the village centre are reached on foot, along cobbled, uphill lanes — allow about twenty minutes' walk each way.
The springs and the village
The Vevčani springs emerge straight from the rock in a small gorge, with footpaths, footbridges and an old watermill by the water — cool and shaded even in summer. The village around it is known for its old stone houses, narrow cobbled lanes, and the tongue-in-cheek 'Republic of Vevčani', a local joke about self-rule complete with a souvenir passport.
A via ferrata route climbs the slope above the village for those who want more than a walk, and trails continue up into the Jablanica mountains behind it.
The Old New Year carnival
On 13 and 14 January, by the old calendar, Vevčani holds a carnival with a tradition said to be over a thousand years old — masks, satire and processions through the village. It draws visitors from across the country, so parking and access get tighter exactly on those days — plan extra time.
Plan your visit
Spring and summer suit the springs best — more water, greener surroundings, and a pleasant temperature in the gorge. For the carnival, arrive early because of the crowds. An hour or two is enough for the springs themselves, and most visitors pair the trip with Struga, only about fifteen minutes away.
Wear shoes with good grip for the cobbles and the steep approach — nothing technical is needed, but the path to the springs isn't for heels.
Taxi vs the bus
There's no direct bus route from Skopje to Vevčani — public transport means going to Struga first, then finding local transport or a taxi onward, with a wait in between. A private car from Skopje goes straight to the springs entrance, no transfers.
