The drive down the A1 motorway

The road to Stobi runs south on the A1 motorway past Veles to the Gradsko interchange. The whole route is paved motorway, and the last stretch to the entrance is a short local road that ends in a car park right by the ticket office — there's no walking down a dirt track to reach the ruins. The drive covers 81 km and takes ≈ 1 h 15 min.

What's actually there

Stobi sits where the city's main streets once crossed, on a branch of the Via Egnatia, the road that linked Rome and Constantinople. The highlight is the Roman theatre, built in the 2nd century, which once held about 7,600 spectators and still hosts summer events. Close by are the remains of the forum, the baths, and houses with intact mosaic floors.

The Episcopal Basilica is among the largest early Byzantine churches in the Balkans; its baptistery has a mosaic floor of peacocks and deer flanking ritual vessels, a common early Christian motif. A small museum at the entrance displays finds from the excavations, including jewellery, coins and pottery.

Planning your visit

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons — the site is largely open with little shade, so summer afternoons can get hot. Budget around ninety minutes to two hours to see the ruins and the museum properly. Opening hours shift with the season, so check current hours before you set out.

The entrance fee is modest, typically a few euros per person — check the current price on site. Many visitors combine Stobi with nearby Stobi Winery, which sits on the same road towards Gradsko, just a few minutes further on.

Taxi versus the train and bus

The Skopje–Gevgelija railway passes through Stobi, with a few trains a day, but the station is some distance from the entrance and the schedule is thin for a day trip. Intercity buses to Veles and Negotino run along the motorway too, but they don't stop at the Stobi turn-off itself — you'd be dropped on the main road, some way from the gate.

Stobi sits at the edge of the Tikveš wine region, the area around Kavadarci and Negotino that produces most of North Macedonia's wine. Travelling in autumn, Kavadarci holds the Tikveš Grape Harvest festival each September, a long-running celebration with a colourful procession through town.

For a longer day out, pairing Stobi in the morning with a winery visit or an afternoon at Lake Tikveš is a common combination — everything in the area is within thirty minutes to an hour of each other.
