Kokino is a prehistoric megalithic observatory on a hilltop, ranked among the world's oldest by NASA and over 3,800 years old. A private taxi from Skopje drives you straight to the parking area below the rocks, and the return leg to town is booked for whatever time suits you.
The drive up to the rocks
The route runs on the A1 motorway to Kumanovo, then a regional road toward Staro Nagoričane and Kriva Palanka, where Kokino is signposted off to the side. The last few kilometres are unpaved but passable for a normal car at low speed. The driver stops at the marked parking area with the information panel at the foot of the hill - that's as far as the car goes.
The walk up to the observatory
From the parking area a path climbs the hill, splitting after a short distance into an easier and a steeper option, about 10 minutes on foot over rocky ground to Tatićev Kamen itself. Wear proper shoes - the terrain is uneven and there's no shade at the top. Someone is usually stationed at the entrance selling a small admission ticket.

The site is on UNESCO's tentative list and ranks among the oldest known observatories anywhere. On 21 June, the summer solstice, dozens of people climb up before sunrise to watch the light fall exactly on the second stone throne.
Planning your visit
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant - there's no shade at the top in summer, and after rain the unpaved approach and the rocky path can get slippery. An hour and a half to two hours covers the parking, the walk and a look around. The site pairs well with the Monastery of St. George at Staro Nagoričane, just off the road, or a longer day out toward Kriva Palanka.
Taxi vs. bus
There's no regular bus route to Kokino - the nearest public transport reaches Kumanovo or Staro Nagoričane, with no onward link to the parking area below the rocks. For a site with an uncovered final stretch like this, a private taxi that takes you straight to the parking area, with the return leg booked for a set time, is effectively the only comfortable option, especially travelling with children or older passengers.
