Kuklica is a village near Kratovo known for its hundred-plus stone rock pillars, a natural rarity shaped over millennia of erosion. A private taxi from Skopje drives you straight to the site, and the return leg is booked for whatever time you choose.
The drive to Kuklica
The route runs on the A1 motorway to Kumanovo, then the regional road toward Kratovo, and a short stretch further, about eight kilometres from Kratovo's centre in total, all on paved road. The car stops in the parking area right next to the rock pillars - no walking over unpaved ground.
The Stone Dolls
Over a hundred volcanic rock pillars, some several metres tall, rise from the ground across an area of about 0.3 square kilometres, shaped by millions of years of erosion in volcanic rock. Local legend tells of a groom who tried to marry two brides on the same day; when the second bride discovered the deception, she cursed the entire wedding party and turned them to stone.
Kuklica is a protected natural monument, and the site is small and quick to walk through on marked paths between the pillars; the best light for photos is early morning or late afternoon.
Planning your visit
Half an hour to an hour covers the whole site. Kuklica makes a perfect short stop on a trip to Kratovo, and with a bit more driving, Cocev Kamen can be folded into the same day. Wear comfortable shoes since the ground between the pillars is uneven and there's no shade.
Taxi vs. bus
There's no regular bus line to Kuklica village - the nearest public transport reaches Kratovo, with no onward connection to the site. Since this is a short but isolated stop, a private taxi that takes you straight to the parking area is more practical than combining a bus with local transport or walking, especially if you're continuing on to another destination the same day.
