Cocev Kamen is a volcanic rock outcrop riddled with caves and rock-shelters, used since prehistory as a shrine and later as a hermitage. A private taxi from Skopje takes you as close as a car can get, and the return leg is booked for whatever time you choose.
The drive to Cocev Kamen
The site sits in Kratovo municipality, but getting there is anything but routine - the road leaves Kratovo toward Kumanovo, then turns off through the villages of Filipovci and Vakuf toward Konjuh, with a few kilometres of narrow, partly gravel road near the end. The car reaches the last possible parking spot before Konjuh village; there's no further vehicle access from there.
The walk to the rock
From the parking spot, an unmarked but visible path runs a few hundred metres to the rock itself, splitting in places and requiring some attention to stay on course. The ground is rocky and can be slippery when wet, so it's not recommended in or right after rain. Budget around an hour to an hour and a half for the walk both ways plus time at the site.
What it actually is
The rock holds natural caves and shelters under overhangs, believed to have served as a shrine and possibly a prehistoric observatory, later used as a hermitage in the Middle Ages. The view from the top takes in a wide stretch of the Kratovo region. This is the most adventurous of the sites in the area - no fence, no attendant, and no signpost at every junction.
Planning your visit
Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes and bring water - there are no facilities at the site. Late spring through early autumn on a dry, sunny day is best. Cocev Kamen pairs well with Kratovo and Kuklica on a longer day out through the region.
Taxi vs. bus
There's no public transport to Cocev Kamen at all - not to Konjuh village, and not on the access road. The only realistic way to visit without your own car is a private taxi that takes you to the final parking point and brings you back, and since the road is uneven and partly gravel, a driver who knows the terrain is a real advantage.
The return trip and onward day trips
A same-day return to Skopje is discounted — the first hour of waiting is free, then it's billed per started hour, and the booking form shows the total. A continuation to Kratovo, Kuklica or Lesnovo Monastery is arranged in the same booking, with the driver working out a single price for the whole day. Cocev Kamen is most often visited as part of a longer day in the region rather than as the sole destination of the trip.
