The Monastery of St. Joachim of Osogovo sits tucked into the oak forest of Osogovo Mountain, a few kilometres above Kriva Palanka. A private taxi from Skopje takes you straight to the monastery courtyard on a paved road, and the return leg is booked for whatever time you choose.
The drive to the monastery
The route runs on the A1 motorway through Kumanovo to Kriva Palanka, then about three more kilometres up a narrow but fully paved road through the forest. The car goes right to the monastery courtyard - no unpaved stretch and no walking required. The final climb winds through oak and beech woods, with a few spots where the road opens onto a view over the town and the plain below.
The monastery complex
The monastery was founded by the hermit St. Joachim of Osogovo back in the 12th century, and today the complex holds two churches. The smaller one, dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, dates from the 14th century and is the oldest surviving part. The larger, three-nave church of St. Joachim himself was built by the master builder Andreja Damjanov in 1851 and has twelve domes - one for each apostle.
The complex is an inhabited monastery with resident monks, set in a quiet forested valley, and a frequent weekend destination for visitors from Kriva Palanka, Kumanovo and Skopje.
Planning your visit
An hour to an hour and a half covers both churches and a short rest in the courtyard. Since it's an active monastery, check current opening hours before you go, especially around religious holidays when the complex sees more visitors. Hiking trails also start from the monastery toward the higher parts of Osogovo Mountain, including the Carev Vrv peak, for visitors with more time and proper footwear.
Spring and autumn give the mildest temperatures for walking the courtyard and the surrounding woods, while summer also suits longer hikes above the monastery. Bring a light jacket even in warm months - the altitude and forest shade make it noticeably cooler than the town below.
Taxi vs. bus
A regular bus reaches only as far as Kriva Palanka, with no organised public transport on to the monastery from there - the last three kilometres uphill have to be driven in your own or a hired vehicle, or walked. For a visit with a guaranteed same-day return, a private taxi that takes you straight to the monastery courtyard is effectively the only comfortable option.
