Lesnovo Monastery, dedicated to the Archangel Michael and the hermit Gabriel of Lesnovo, holds some of the best-preserved 14th-century frescoes in the region. A private taxi from Skopje takes you straight to the monastery courtyard, and the return leg is booked for whatever time you choose.
The drive to Lesnovo
The route runs on the A1 motorway to Kumanovo, then toward Probištip, and from there via Zletovo to Lesnovo village, tucked inside its own small volcanic crater. The direct road from Probištip straight to Lesnovo is narrow, winding and used by mining trucks, so drivers take the longer but calmer route via Zletovo instead. It's paved the whole way to the monastery courtyard.
The monastery and its frescoes
The monastery complex standing today was founded by the nobleman Jovan Oliver in 1341. The main church was painted in 1346-47 and the narthex in 1349, the work of three known painters of the period - Sevasto, Mihail and Marko - whose names survive in medallions within the frescoes themselves. The iconostasis in the church today is later, from the 18th century.
In the rocks beneath the monastery are the caves where, according to tradition, the hermit Gabriel of Lesnovo lived and died before the monastery complex was even built.
Planning your visit
The monastery is an active church, so check current opening hours before you go if you want to see inside at the frescoes. An hour to an hour and a half covers a visit. Lesnovo fits well into a longer day out with Kratovo, Kuklica and Cocev Kamen, all in the same region, with several more hours of driving for a full day.
Lesnovo village sits in its own small volcanic crater, with a handful of houses and fields around the monastery complex - a quieter alternative to the larger craters around Kratovo. Spring and autumn give the most comfortable temperatures for a walk around the courtyard and monastery grounds.
Taxi vs. bus
Public transport to Lesnovo village is rare and impractical for a day visit - the nearest regular bus lines reach Probištip, with no onward connection to the monastery. For a same-day visit with a return to Skopje, a private taxi is effectively the only comfortable option, especially if you're combining the monastery with one or two more sites in the region on the same day.
