Treskavec Monastery stands at 1,300 metres under the Zlatovrv peak, looking out over the whole Pelagonia valley. The road up is steep and winding but fully paved, and a private transfer takes you right to the monastery gate, with pickup anywhere in Skopje and the return leg bookable the same way.
The Drive to the Monastery
The route runs to Prilep on the A1 motorway and over the Pletvar pass, then about 8 km further uphill on a steep, winding, but fully asphalted road that starts near Prilep's cemetery. Total distance 145 km, a drive of ≈ 2 h 55 min.
Treskavec was once one of the country's least accessible monasteries, but asphalt now reaches all the way to the courtyard — no need for a high-clearance vehicle, just careful driving through the switchbacks.
Before the modern road was built, the only way up was on foot or by pack animal along the old trail, still used by hikers today — the paved climb now takes about ten minutes by car.
The Monastery and Its Frescoes
The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God, rebuilt and richly endowed by the Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin, and later by King Dušan after his 1334 victory over Byzantium, when he granted the monastery estates in some twenty surrounding villages.
The exonarthex still holds frescoes from 1334-1343, some damaged by a later earthquake but still among the region's most important surviving medieval paintings. From the courtyard, under the Zlatovrv peak, the view stretches to Prilep, Bitola and Kruševo.
Plan Your Visit
Spring and autumn are most pleasant for the drive up the switchbacks and for walking the monastery grounds — winter can leave the road icy, so check conditions before you go. One to two hours cover a visit; most guests combine the trip with Markovi Kuli and Prilep's Old Bazaar, and some with Zrze Monastery, which lies in the opposite direction.
Treskavec is an active male monastic community, so dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. There are no food or drink facilities on site, so bring water, especially in summer.
