Zrze Monastery stands alone at around 1,000 metres on the slopes of Dautica, above the village of the same name, looking out over all of Pelagonia. A private transfer takes you from anywhere in Skopje to the car park below the monastery — the last stretch is on foot — with the return leg booked in the same request.
The Drive to Zrze — and the Final Walk
From Prilep the route heads toward Makedonski Brod, turning off at Ropotovo and running through the villages of Ropotovo, Pestalevo and Sekirci to Kostinci, where a paved road with switchbacks near the top leads on to Zrze village. Total distance 129 km, a drive of ≈ 2 h 30 min.
The final stretch approaching and through Zrze village crosses patches of unpaved surface among tobacco fields, where the car slows right down. The vehicle reaches a car park above the village, and from there it's a short walk of around ten minutes up to the monastery gate.
The Monastery and Makarije's Frescoes
The church is dedicated to the Transfiguration. It was here that the brothers Pribil and Prijezda took monastic vows, later known as the monks Jovan and Makarije Zograf, who in the 14th and early 15th centuries produced some of the most valued icons in Balkan medieval art.
Among them is the icon of the Virgin Pelagonitissa from 1421, one of the last great achievements of medieval icon painting in the region. From the monastery courtyard, the view opens over the whole Pelagonia valley.
Plan Your Visit
Spring and autumn are best, when the unpaved section of road is dry and firm — after rain that stretch can get slippery. Budget two to three hours in total for the drive, the short climb and the visit itself. Bring comfortable shoes for the final walk and dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, as is customary at an active monastery.

There's no public transport to Zrze, and the unpaved final stretch into the village isn't kind to every car without careful driving.
