St. Naum Monastery stands right on the shore of Lake Ohrid, almost at the Albanian border, where the springs feeding the Black Drim rise straight from the lakebed. A private transfer from Skopje takes you directly to the monastery entrance, with the same car waiting to bring you home the same day.
The drive from Skopje
The route runs through Tetovo, Gostivar and Kičevo on the A2 motorway, then on toward Ohrid, where part of the new fast road link is still being finished. From Ohrid, a local road heads south along the lake shore, passing Trebeništa, Peštani and Trpejca, to the monastery, the last stop before the Albanian border crossing.
The lakeside road is well paved and mostly flat for the whole stretch. Parking sits right at the entrance to the monastery complex, and it's a short walk from there to the church and the springs.
Inside the monastery complex
The monastery was founded by St. Naum himself in the 10th century, and tradition holds that his tomb lies inside. The complex is known for its frescoes and for the peacocks that roam freely through the grounds. Small rowing boats leave from the monastery shore toward the 'eyes' of the springs — dozens of underwater vents feeding crystal-clear water into Lake Ohrid.
Shaded paths run along the shore, with several spots to sit and take in the lake. The complex is quietest early in the morning, before the tour groups arrive.
Right at the border
The Albanian border crossing is just a few minutes' drive from the monastery — a glance at the map shows just how close to the frontier St. Naum sits. Crossing into Albania isn't part of our service, but it gives a good sense of how far south on the lake this monastery really is.
Plan your visit
Mid-morning to early afternoon works best, when the boats to the springs are running (usually the warmer months — check current conditions before you go). Allow an hour or two for the monastery and springs, more if you take a boat out.
The road passes right by the Bay of Bones, so most visitors combine St. Naum with a short stop there on the way to or from Ohrid.
Taxi vs boat and bus
There's no direct bus from Skopje to St. Naum. In summer, tourist boats leave Ohrid for the monastery, but on a fixed schedule and taking several hours, which doesn't always suit every family.
