The motorway drive via Tabanovce

The whole trip runs on motorway - from Skopje through Kumanovo to the Tabanovce border crossing, then on the Serbian motorway via Preševo, Vranje and Leskovac into Niš. This stretch is part of the corridor toward Belgrade and on to Central Europe, so the road is wide, two lanes each way. The car drops you right in central Niš, no transfer needed.

Border crossing and documents

North Macedonian citizens enter Serbia on a valid ID card - but only the new card that reads North Macedonia; the old Republic of Macedonia cards are refused at the crossing. Tabanovce-Preševo is one of the busiest crossings on the corridor, so at peak times - summer weekends, holidays - the wait often runs past an hour; there's no need to change currency at the border, denars or euros are both accepted through to Niš.

Travellers on other passports should check their own country's entry requirements before the trip.

Niš Fortress and the Skull Tower

Niš Fortress, built by the Ottomans on older Roman and Byzantine foundations, covers the whole old centre of the city - massive walls, gates and an inner space now full of cafés and a summer stage, good for an evening walk. A few kilometres further out, the Skull Tower (Ćele Kula), raised in 1809, is a sobering memorial to the uprising against Ottoman rule - of the original 952 skulls built into its walls, 58 remain today.

The Mediana archaeological site, remains of a lavish Roman villa linked to Emperor Constantine the Great, sits a few kilometres from the centre; after a long closure, it's open to visitors again. The Red Cross concentration camp, one of the best-preserved Nazi camps in Europe, stands as a memorial museum to the thousands of prisoners who passed through it.

Niška Banja and Sićevo Gorge

Niška Banja, a spa town just a few kilometres from the centre, is known for radon-rich thermal springs used to treat rheumatism, plus tennis courts and a paragliding club active through the summer. Sićevo Gorge, seventeen kilometres long along the Nišava River, has hiking trails and climbing crags, with a 14th-century monastery inside it - better as its own half-day trip than a quick stop along the way.

Plan your visit, and business travel

Half a day covers the fortress and the centre; a full day adds the Skull Tower and Mediana. Niš is also a university and business hub in southern Serbia - the University of Niš draws visiting lecturers and conference delegates, and the transfer gets you to the meeting address on time; you can book a car for a colleague with just their contact details.

Taxi vs. the bus to Niš

Niš-ekspres and other operators run several daily services between Skopje and Niš, with a ride of around four hours. A private car goes straight to your destination in the city, no transfer through the bus station and no waiting on a timetable - more useful when you're travelling with a group or luggage, since the fixed price per vehicle is split across everyone.

A same-day return from Niš to Skopje is discounted — the first hour of waiting is free, then it's billed per started hour, and the booking form shows the total once your visit or meeting is done. A later return is booked as a separate one-way transfer at the normal price.
