Popova Kula is the winery with the 17-metre tower above Demir Kapija, built on the site of an old roadside watchtower on the Roman road through the Vardar valley. The drive to the winery
The route runs on the A1 motorway through Veles and Negotino to Demir Kapija — about ≈ 1 h 35 min over 113 km on a flat, fast road with no surprises. The winery sits a few minutes' drive west of town, on the southern slopes of Veliko Brdo, with its own car park at the entrance.
This is one of the few trips where the ride is part of the point, not just how you get there — after the tasting, the driver takes you straight back to your door in Skopje, so nobody in the group has to stay off the wine to drive.
The tower, the wine, and the estate
The tasting room sits at the top of a 17-metre tower, built in memory of the older Popova Kula — the priest's tower — that once stood on the same spot, which gives the winery its name. The tower terrace looks out over the whole Vardar valley, and toward sunset over the vineyards.
The local microclimate blends continental and Mediterranean influences, with over 280 sunny days a year — conditions that let Popova Kula keep native varieties like Stanušina alongside a range of international ones. Tastings are booked directly with the winery; we handle the ride there and back.

When to go
Autumn, during harvest, is the liveliest season — but the winery welcomes guests year-round. With the terrace and the view, late afternoon before sunset is a particularly good time for a tasting.
A guided tasting of a few wines usually runs an hour and a half to two hours; add lunch on the terrace and the whole afternoon goes easily. Check current tasting times and offerings directly with the winery before you set off.

There's no direct bus line to the winery itself — the closest a bus gets is Demir Kapija or Gevgelija, leaving a few kilometres that aren't realistic to walk, especially after a tasting.
