Tikveš, the plain around Kavadarci and Negotino, is the country's largest wine region — most Macedonian wine comes from here. A private car takes you from Skopje straight between the wineries, and the same driver brings you home, however many glasses you've tried.
The drive into Tikveš
From Skopje you drive south on the A1 motorway past Veles into the Tikveš basin around Kavadarci and Negotino. The whole route is sealed road, right up to the wineries themselves. It covers 96 km and takes ≈ 1 h 30 min.
Because the driver takes you door to door and then brings you home, nobody in the group has to stay sober behind the wheel — that's the main reason people choose a private transfer for a wine-region visit in the first place.
The wineries of the region
Tikveš mainly grows Vranec, the native red grape behind most Macedonian red wine, alongside Stanušina, Smederevka and Temjanika. Tikveš Winery in Kavadarci, founded in 1885, is the oldest and among the largest in Southeast Europe, known for its Vranec-based T'ga za Jug. Negotino is home to Bovin, a private winery that exports abroad, while Demir Kapija has Popova Kula, a smaller winery known for preserving the Stanušina grape.

Harvest season and the best time to visit
September is the most exciting month in Tikveš, when Kavadarci holds the Tikveš Grape Harvest festival — a three-day tradition with a carnival procession, running since 1964. The region is especially lively then, with winery stands set up on the town square.
Outside harvest, spring and early autumn are pleasant too, with warm sun and fewer people at the wineries themselves. Summer on the plain can get hot, so tastings in the shade of a cellar suit the season better than long walks outdoors.
Taxi versus the bus
Buses to Kavadarci and Negotino run along the motorway several times a day, but none of them stop outside a specific winery — passengers are dropped at a bus station and have to find their own way from there. For a day visiting several wineries, that means arranging separate rides each time.
A private transfer takes you straight between wineries in the order you choose, priced per vehicle rather than per seat. For a group tasting together, that's simpler and cheaper than several separate taxi rides.
