Marko's Monastery, the Church of St. Demetrius in the village of Markova Sušica, is one of the most important medieval monuments near Skopje - built in the 14th century, its frescoes among the last great royal foundations before the Ottoman conquest. The drive to Markova Sušica
The road heads south out of Skopje through Studeničani municipality, past a string of quiet villages before reaching Markova Sušica. The last stretch narrows to a rural lane that ends on a grassy field right beside the church - that's where the car parks, and the monastery is a few steps' walk from there. No tight bends, no steep climbs, just a calm country road well away from city traffic.
The Church of St. Demetrius and its frescoes
Construction began under Serbian King Vukašin in 1345; his son King Marko finished and had it frescoed by 1377 - hence the popular name, Marko's Monastery. The frescoes depict the Virgin, the twelve great feasts, Christ and St. Nicholas, well preserved and ranked among the significant examples of late-medieval painting in the region. It remains an active Orthodox church, so dress modestly and keep your voice down inside.
Marko of Balkan folk legend
King Marko, King Vukašin's son, is the same Marko of the South Slavic epic songs - the legendary hero whose feats have been recited across the Balkans for centuries. The monastery he finished and had painted is a rare chance to stand somewhere tied directly to his real, documented life, outside the legend.
